I am NOT an expert at catfishing - but, we do have a lot of success. So, the following are a few answers to some questions I have received - these answers are based on Rick, Sas and my experience on the lake...
Favorite bait: Changes with the area and time of year - usually it is either Hot Dogs (cheap ones) or shad. Right now the shad are sponing - and the catfish are going crazy for them - so shad is the best bet right now. How deep: Winter and Spring and some of Fall we stay shallow - Summer - we go deep.
Equipment: Stiff catfish poles are the best. We use a 20 lbs test line and closed reels. Number 4/0 hooks are our choice. We fish with corks and NO weights - just the weight of the bait. In the Summer we will use a slip weight and fish off the bottom.
Best secret: chum, chum and chum and be patient - the best bet is to chum the area you want to fish with sour mesh (fermented wheat and chick scratch) and range pellets - you can get this nice smelling stuff at the feed stores - be sure to wear gloves. I say be patient - it takes a about 30-45 minutes for them to move in sometimes... other times they are WAITING for you! But, if they do not move in after 30-45 min. move... there is a fine fishing line between just sitting there and fun...
One more thing - it helps if you have a dog that can point you in the right direction (physically or mentally)!
This is a 15 pounder caught on a BIG shad in Lake Belton about 7:30 in the morning.
